The following video was only just published in this past month. Before that, I've seen excerpts from the documentary but the publisher says this one is the "full one". It includes parts I've never seen of course, the most amazing of which is how the tale ofAndrea Barnes is told. What a fantastic tale it is! It's not directly related to my project of the perimeter mileage tour-- but it's so fascinating that I have to include it as part of our education on finding the true perimeter distance. Andrea Barnes was convinced that there was an edge-- and set out several times to see it! Alone! Or with limited crews and a little sponsorship. She did something like what Math Boylen is proposing with ropes and pegs, going across the ice to prove there is NO wall or edge-- only ongoing distance beyond the south pole. I suggested earlier that Math would end up like Andrea if he did so... and that's why I propose being a "keyboard explorer of the perimeter" to prove antarctica a rim, not an island. Anyway, here's a stunning tale... of Andrea Barnes from ONTARIO Canada-- my own home-province! I guess Andrea and I have kinship in a way now.

You can not take into consideration that the Apollo 11 space flight is even valid evidence if you look at the Van Allen radiation belt and then look at the press conference and psycho analyse the crew's behavior as they give their testimonies of being in space. If you were told you were going to space and then were told to pretend that you had been there, that is what these men displayed at that press conference. NASA lied about the whole thing for money.

They looked very edgy and nervous, like they were fearful of giving the wrong answer. When examining the whole moon landing incident, I have found so many mistakes.

Read about her in 'Quest To the End of the Earth: The True Story of Andrea Barnes and the British Flat Earth Movement in the Late 19th Century' by John Hendon (1998). I got mine used from amazon. On the whole, not a bad book though there were a few mistakes and serious omissions in my opinion. I guess to be expected, Hendon being a journalist and not a scholar on the subject. Malcolm Gladwell began working on a book on Barnes but dropped his project when he found out Hendon's book was about to go to press.

This is not age-appropriate for school children because the gifted child WILL take it seriously-- interpreting what is supposed to be an exercise as a revelation DISGUISED as an exercise-- and thus deniable by school authorities. ReplyDeleteCaptain Rick, It is said that any traveling beyond 80 degrees further into Antarctica, whether it is a sphere or flat will be dark all the time. My question about Andrea's trip would have been; How did she take pictures in total darkness? Is the film actually of dark nights and if seeing the negatives of the film, could they see details, I'm sure the film has been analyzed and dismissed, Since her body or mobile was found in daylight hours, it seems she died almost to her return destination, what a shame she didn't make it. Before I would ever take on this expedition, I would stay on one of the islands as a tourist between November and January and see if, as claimed, there is 24/7 daylight. If there is, case closed, the earth is a sphere. Not necessarily spinning through space (I've never believed that), but the sun circling around in a spiral cancer to capricorn would still work. But, my earth does seem flat, especially over the seas. Thank you for your blog. May God open doors where men cannot close them.
ReplyDeleteI think it's supposed to be dark for 6 months and daylight for 6 months as the sun at or near the poles doesn't set or rise completely. I've never heard that it would be dark all the time.
DeleteSorry I didn't clarify where I got that thought. A notation on the Gleason's World Map says that 80 or more south is continual darkness. Which can't be, because the video "Frozen South"is a time lapse of 24/7 sunlight at the south pole base station, which is 0 degrees south. Also, there are normal cycled days/nights through the year. "Frozen South" would have had to have faked the "south pole" as simply a chosen point somewhere on the perimeter-- and somewhat north of 80. Thanks for pointing out the notation on the Gleason map however. I'll check that again. If that's what the notation says, I'll do an entire blog post on it.

DeleteRichard Smart-- This blog is not about belief in a flat earth but RATHER about the circumference of Antarctica. IF the circumference is 15,000 miles, it's likely spherical like they say. If it's 60,000 miles, then the globe model doesn't work and that figure is more consistent with a plain. I wouldn't conclude right away that it's a plain but only that that the 60,000 is CONSISTENT with a plain and thus testable for flatness with further testing. The MAIN thing I look at here is how to verify the circumference of the world at the high SOUTH latitudes. There are numerous problems I can't surmount. For example, there is NO Antarctic inspection tour that has gone completely around Antarctica to visit most stations in a verifiable period of time with verifiable distance measurement. ONLY partial OFFICIAL inspection trips have been made. Why do you think that is? The official inspection tours, you would think, would be sanctioned for access and travel in any way they please-- yet this circumnavigation by air or water has not occurred. At the very least, it's mildly curious, wouldn't you say?

DeleteI found nd this film to be an inspiring story of a brave and tenacious women who's courage was surpassed only by her intuitive insight into the true nature of the physical universe. Mocked by her contemporaries, she would later be vindicated by modern science. This film was made over a quarter century ago so the animations may seem a bit comical to us today. Also, a basic science education through calculus based physics, some familiarity with general relativity (not necessarily a thorough understanding), and a willingness to earnestly apply your God-given reason are prerequisites to understanding this. Some people without this background have raised petty and irrelevant objections. And some people are just indoctrinated sheep who refuse to think outside the box. This film is not for them.

ReplyDeleteIt appears that the warnings above that Andrea Barnes was a hoax are true. Bullfrog Documentary company just admitted to me that they made the whole thing up. They're using "education in media" as a front for their hoax. They apparently push this hoax on children pretending that it educates them in how to detect what's true or not in media. The trouble with that is that a lot of what they say is very realistic vis a vis the flat earth argument side of things. They even go to the extent us using older looking newsreel footage in black and white and old pictures. The results of their online posting of this "exercise for school children" fooled even me. They've gone too far in creating a "critical thinking exercise" for school children-- and I now suspect that there is some very very twisted thinking going on at Bullfrog-- to the extent that the Andrea Barnes story might be real after all-- since it's SO realisitc-- and that someone is using "education of children in critical thinking" as a cover for this real story. You'll note that on the Bullfrog site of documentaries for sale that there are NO OTHER DOCUMENTARIES used for the same purpose as the Andrea Barnes story. How strange and anomalous is that? DeleteA guy named Scott Barrie seems to be the producer of the Andrea Barnes doc. The Antarctica documentary seems out of line with his other work in childrens entertainment. He has not created a series, for example, for children on how to detect fraud in film. He HAS contributed and created other series of light entertainment however.
I don't seem to be able to confirm his identity on wikipedia for example. Any help on this would be appreciated.
I just looked up the Australian National Archives NLA Trove. They show six copies of a 1990 documentary on Andrea Barnes made by a Canadian filmmaker Scott Barrie. Why would anyone have bothered creating a fake person who believed Earth was flat in 1990???? More to the point, why would the National Library of Australia hold a copy plus five other State libraries in Australua hold copies as well, if the film was fake??

The production company ended up convincing many, by way of what-they-intended-as-mockery, that the main idea in the story was, in fact, true! In other words, the story was TOO good! Many of the publicity stunts being carried out today, in regards to Antarctica, are done so well as news-- that many people believe them as well-- such as crossing Antarctica solo or racing around 60 degrees in a sail boat race.

I could see his eyes bugging out and typing really fast & hard to "make his point!" Although you can see I made it wall the way down to the bottom of this blog, I originally found it after "searching" more about Andrea Barnes, this is the first link that came up. Even Eric Dubay called out Leo Zagami (interviewed) early on as a gatekeeper front of the Flat Earth Society pushing shilly ideas amongst the greater established facts.
I think its a mindfuck for students, a mocking of the masses and somewhat of a test to check who is thinking.
It would be easy to fake the story of this woman, but hard to kill the memory in so many if such a remarkable woman existed, so if there is no other evidence we may have to let her go as a true thinking hero but it doesnt mean the earth is a sphere spiralling around the sun. So Andrea Barnes is a fictional character. How disappointing. I too made it to the bottom of this blog, so I too am informed of the mockumentary. I will say that the Earth is indeed flat though. I have been feverishly researching and debunking the globular theory of the Earth being a sphere for 6 months now. And trust me when I say that I was VERY SKEPTICAL when the idea was first brought to my attention! For anybody who insists that Flat Earthers are ignorant, stupid, silly "retards", ("retards" who are simply using NASA's mathematics and equations to disprove their GLOBE THEORY mind you) really ought to take a moment to see the facts laid out in front of them. If they could commit to holding an unbiased view for even 5 minutes, they might have their minds blown, their eyes opened, and their belief systems shattered (in a good way). I say MIGHT simply because there are some ignorant, puppet/slaves like Rich-tard who don't have the mental capacity to look beyond what they have been force fed their whole lives. ReplyDeleteI found your page about this as I remember watching this documentary in my youth. I found it to be a fascinating documentary back then even though the globe model is really shoved in our faces. (My daughter came home with an exercise book that stated the following. "We all live on the planet we call earth. Below is a picture of the earth. The earth is not flat. It is shaped like a ball. Do you agree?"- how can she critically think otherwise or question the information they are presenting her?)
ReplyDeleteI have been spending time reading on the flat earth theory because I find it interesting and that documentary has kept in my memory all these years later. I must say that I never found it to be a "critical thinking" mockumentary because I never saw it prefaced or ended with a lesson on critical thinking. I didn't see it in the school. I clearly remember watching it on cable at my Grandmas house, which probably would have resulted in me seeing it on the actual TLC (when it was actually the learning channel) or on A&E. They both used to have lots of documentaries back then.
Why would a critical thinking mockumentary be made before we really saw anything of the sort? Why would it not have a person at the end asking you questions about what you saw? Why would I remember it all these years if the flat earth theory had been completely debunked in my globe indoctrinated youth? I don't doubt that I was asked the same leading-you-to-the-appropriate-answer critical thinking exercises that my daughter just completed.
It makes me double think the documentary. Was it made about a real person and then touted as being fake? Was it fake, touted as being real to longer in the collective memories of humans so that we would question the globe model now?
I have always loved geography and your simple explanation of measuring the circumference of Antarctica makes perfect sense. In all essence I feel we must question why it has not been done as it would settle the flat/globe debate without having to resort to photo shopped photos from space.
Thank you for bringing this documentary back to my attention in my pursuit to understand the flat earth theory.

Thanks for your story. Great personal anecdotal information there. As far as Andrea Barnes goes, I liked the documentary, and my opinion is that it was real. It somehow got "loose" in the world at large.... maybe through Divine Providence or something like that. Sort of like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. A lot of people claim that's fake too but it's looking real to me, in my opinion.
